Strabane Shines Bright as Crowds Celebrate Christmas Lights Switch-On
24 November 2025
Strabane was packed with festive cheer on Saturday as crowds of visitors wrapped up warm and filled the town centre for the annual Christmas Lights Switch-On. From noon to early evening, the town came alive with music, markets, street entertainment and family fun, culminating in a magical moment at 5pm when Santa Claus lit up Strabane’s Christmas lights to the delight of cheering crowds.
Hosted by the ever-popular Chrissy Mac and his band, Railway Street was transformed into the beating heart of the festivities, with live performances and plenty of festive banter keeping spirits high throughout the afternoon. The Christmas Community Market proved a major draw once again, offering a vibrant mix of crafts, gifts, seasonal treats and local produce that had visitors browsing, sampling and shopping for festive favourites.
Just around the corner, Castle Street’s bustling Food Quarter filled the air with mouthwatering aromas as families enjoyed winter warmers, sweet treats and hot drinks while enjoying music and dance performances from talented local arts groups. Over on Canal Street, pony rides brought big smiles to younger visitors, while John Wesley Street’s Candy Cane Lane, nestled inside the Grass Roots Community Hub and Café, offered cosy décor, festive charm and a special seasonal menu.
Strabane Library was another hub of excitement, with children enjoying face painting, arts and crafts, cookie decorating, and the chance to write letters to Santa or create their own reindeer food to take home.
This year’s event was made possible through a strong collaborative effort, with Council officers working closely alongside the Strabane BID and community partners to plan, deliver and enhance the festive experience. Their shared commitment to showcasing the very best of the town ensured a welcoming, vibrant celebration for residents and visitors alike.
A highlight of this year’s programme was the brand-new Scrooge Christmas Trail, delivered by Class Act Theatre Group. The immersive 35-minute experience led families through a live retelling of a seasonal classic, beginning at Strabane Library before winding its way through Castle Street, John Wesley Street and Railway Street. With dance, carol singing and theatrical surprises hidden throughout the route and finishing at the Christmas Community Market, the trail proved a firm favourite with families.
As the clock neared 5pm, anticipation built around the Main Stage at the top of Railway Street where Santa joined Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Ruairí McHugh, to count down to the big switch-on. When the lights finally illuminated the town, the crowd erupted into cheers, capturing the magic of the moment.
Mayor McHugh said, "The Strabane Christmas Lights Switch-On never fails to bring our community together, and today was no exception. The town was filled with warmth, joy and Christmas spirit from start to finish. With local performers, markets, families and Santa all joining in the celebration, it was truly a wonderful day."
