Team effort behind the scenes key to Foyle Cup success story

17 July 2026

Every summer, thousands of young footballers, coaches, families and supporters descend on Derry and the wider North West for one of the biggest youth football tournaments in Europe.

For participants, the O’Neill’s Foyle Cup is about competition, friendship, memories and the opportunity to play against teams from across Ireland, Britain and beyond. But behind every fixture, every goal and every presentation ceremony lies months of planning and preparation involving a huge network of partners, volunteers and supporters working together to make the tournament a success.

Among those playing a key role is Derry City and Strabane District Council, which is proud to be a lead sponsor of the tournament and an active partner in delivering the event each year.

Long before the first whistle is blown, Council teams are working behind the scenes to ensure facilities are ready to welcome the thousands of visitors who travel to the region for the week-long tournament. From maintaining and preparing pitches to coordinating facilities management, grounds maintenance, cleansing operations, marketing and promotional support and visitor services, Council staff work across multiple departments to help create a positive experience for everyone involved.

Council-owned pitches and sports facilities are among the key venues used throughout the tournament, with grounds teams carrying out extensive preparation to ensure playing surfaces meet the high standards expected by teams and organisers. Grass cutting schedules are intensified, facilities are inspected, and changing rooms, toilets and spectator areas are prepared to accommodate the significant increase in footfall.

Additional support staff are deployed throughout the tournament period to support the smooth operation of venues, manage facilities and ensure sites remain clean, safe and welcoming for players, families and visitors.

The effort extends beyond sport. Council cleansing teams help maintain the appearance of the city and district throughout the week, while teams work alongside organisers to promote the tournament and showcase the region to a global audience. Visitor information, tourism promotion and event support all contribute to ensuring guests leave with a positive impression of the North West.

The success of the Foyle Cup has been built over many years through collaboration, commitment and a shared ambition to create a world-class sporting event. While the tournament continues to grow in scale and reputation, its foundations remain firmly rooted in partnership.

The dedication of the organising committee, sponsors, clubs, volunteers and Council staff, together with the enthusiasm of participants and their families, has helped establish the Foyle Cup as a highlight of the sporting calendar and a major contributor to the region's economy and reputation.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Grace Uí Niallais said: “The Foyle Cup is one of the flagship sporting events in our region and one that we are incredibly proud to support. While the football on the pitch rightly takes centre stage, there is an enormous amount of work taking place behind the scenes to ensure the tournament runs smoothly. As a lead sponsor and key delivery partner, Council is committed to providing high-quality facilities, well-maintained pitches and welcoming venues for the thousands of players, coaches and supporters who visit our city and district each year.

“I want to acknowledge the dedication of our staff across multiple departments who work tirelessly in the lead-up to and throughout the tournament, as well as the organisers, sponsors, volunteers and local communities whose efforts make the Foyle Cup such a success. Most importantly, we thank the young players and their families who continue to make this event such a special occasion."

Philip Devlin, PRO with the Foyle Cup added: “The Foyle Cup tournament simply would not be possible without the support and collaboration of our many partners and sponsors. Derry City and Strabane District Council plays a hugely important role, not only as a sponsor but through the facilities, services and operational support it provides throughout the week.

"We are extremely grateful to Council staff, our volunteers, sponsors, participating clubs and the many families who travel here every year. The Foyle Cup has grown into an internationally recognised tournament because of the collective effort of so many people, and we look forward to welcoming another generation of players to the North West."

The O’Neill’s Foyle Cup takes place across the North West on 20-25 July 2026 and is supported by Derry City & Strabane District Council, Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council, O'Neills Sportswear, Derry Credit Union, Apex Housing, Ark Housing Association, Choice Housing, Radius Housing, Seagate, Inner City Trust, Brunswick Moviebowl, Ulster University and North West Regional College.
