Elite Athlete Travel Bursary

DERRY CITY & STRABANE DISTRICT COUNCIL HAS INVESTED IN A NEW ATHLETE SUPPORT FUND THAT WILL PROVIDE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TOWARDS TRAVEL COSTS TO COMPETITION FOR THOSE ATHLETES COMPETING AT THE TOP OF THEIR SPORT.

The aim of the fund is to provide talented athletes with financial assistance to help cover the cost of travel to organised competitive events for which competitors have qualified at County, Provincial, National or International level.

Elite Athlete Travel Bursary
This bursary is to cater for those athletes whose competition falls outside of our current grant aid call.

Funding will be allocated under a tiered system relevant to location of competition:

Tier 1 International – Outside United Kingdom & Republic of Ireland

Tier 2 National – England, Scotland, Wales & Republic of Ireland (excluding counties Donegal, Cavan & Monaghan)

Tier 3 Provincial – Ulster Individuals can apply for support up to 50% of eligible costs, and up to a maximum of:

– Tier 1 – £400

– Tier 2 – £300

– Tier 3 – £200

• The bursary will cover project specific costs associated with travel. Please note that only costs incurred by the athlete(s) competing will be eligible.
• Travel costs will be considered towards the cost of organised competitive events for which competitors have qualified at County, Provincial, National or International level. Invitational tournaments or ongoing travel costs are not permitted.
• Applicants will apply using a form supplied by Sports Development; to whom the form should be returned.

Proof of eligibility from the recognised governing body MUST be enclosed. When an applicant has qualified to represent their sport at county level or higher, a formal confirmation of qualification to participate in a competition must be included to support their application.

WHO CAN APPLY?

• An application must be submitted by an individual.
• All applicants must reside in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.
• Applicants must be a member of a sports club that is affiliated to a national governing body of sport. All activities must be recognised as a sport as outlined on Sport Northern Ireland or Sport Ireland websites.
• All competitions/events must be an officially organised and/or be recognised by the national governing body.

HOW DOES THE FUND WORK?

• Application must be submitted before the event has taken place.
• Individuals can only submit one application per financial year.
• Individuals who have been successful in securing funding through Support for Sport Grant Aid for travel will not be eligible for this bursary.
• Applicants must provide evidence of spend incurred via a fully paid booking confirmation or receipt.

NB: Cash payments will not be considered.
