I was taught how to fly fish around the age of 10, then taught myself how to tie flies!
My Granda got me a vice and some bits to tie a few trout flies and that’s where it all began.
I used YouTube a lot to help me with tying especially Davie McPhail and after a couple of months I took to it very well.
I grew up fishing lough Sheelin as a teenager and caught many trout on my dry flies. Wet flies too! I also fished the local burn which runs through my home village, Balnamore! It has a healthy stock of wild brown trout and the very odd salmon.
I then got interested in saltwater fly fishing for sea trout, which is great fun once you find them.
In the past few years I have focused most of my fishing on Atlantic salmon. My local river is the River Bush in Co. Antrim which I’ve learned a lot about over the past couple of seasons. I am also a member of the Agivey and River Roe which are local to me. I regularly fish the Finn and am also a member of Sion Mills Angling Club on the river Mourne.
In 2025 I was delighted to have been I able to tie at the Irish Fly Fair with many international tiers.
I have created a few of my own fly patterns but the most successful one was the Polychrome, it speaks for itself. Over 250 salmon landed in its debut season.
