Newtownstewart Castle EHOD 2026

Date: 12 September 2026 - 13 September 2026

Venue: Main Street, Newtownstewart, County Tyrone, BT78 4AD

TBD

Standing at the top of a slope overlooking the River Strule, Newtownstewart Castle occupies the third defensive site in this strategically important area, once at the heart of O'Neill territory in the pre-Plantation period. Earlier defences included the mound known as Pigeon Hill, located across the river, and nearby Harry Avery's Castle, a medieval stronghold of the O'Neills.
Although the area was already known as "baile nua" (new town) before the Plantation, the present street layout dates from the early 17th century. The castle itself was built around 1619 by Sir Robert Newcomen and later modified by his son-in-law, Sir William Stewart, after 1628.
As part of the visitor experience, a temporary art installation, 'Art on Your Doorstep,' will be displayed on the boundary gable wall, adding a contemporary creative element to this historic setting.
This is an unstaffed site, and visitors are free to explore the exterior at their own pace. Please note that some areas may be inaccessible.
