Strategic Growth

Ireland Northwest - Gateway to Growth

Following the UK’s decision to leave the European Union Derry City and Strabane District Council (DCSDC) in collaboration with Donegal County Council (DCC) agreed to undertake an initial ‘scoping exercise’ with the purpose of collating information on the probable impact of Brexit across the North West City Region. The first stage results from the work are now complete and were presented at our Conference Driving Growth in the North West with the Challenges and Opportunities of Brexit which was held on the 6th December 2016 at An Graináin Hotel, Donegal.

The work is being led by a team within DCSDC and DCC including Donegal’s Research Unit and Derry and Strabane’s Economic and Statistical Support Team. They are being assisted by academics from the Economic Policy Centre Ulster University, Department of Economics Trinity College Dublin, and the School of Sociology and Social Policy Queen’s University Belfast.
This work comprises a number of strands

  • the collation of baseline socio-economic data on the North West Region
  • consultation with stakeholders across the region to gain insight into the key issues emerging in the new context
  • macro-economic analysis of the effects of Brexit at National and local level including quantification of the probable economic impact across a range of scenarios

The work will continue and deepen as the nature of the UK’s exit from the EU becomes clearer.
Further resources will be available on this page as the work progresses.
