CLOSURE OF SOME OLD CEMETERIES

Areas of some old cemeteries in the District have been cordoned off by Council for health and safety reasons. Donaghedy Cemetery is completely closed with signage being erected and areas closed off around unstable structures at other ancient cemetery sites.

Council will be undertaking work to make these structures safe and will reopen as soon as this is complete.

All active cemeteries used for burials remain open.

CITY CEMETERY EXTENSION AT KILDRUM GARDENS

Derry City and Strabane District Council are extending burial capacity within the Derry City area by extending the existing City Cemetery onto the wooded lands at Southway, south of Kildrum Gardens.

The proposed scheme is seen as critical to extending the short term burial capacity within the City Cemetery and will also help facilitate Council with the transition from the existing City Cemetery to a new strategic greenfield cemetery facility elsewhere within the Council area.

What is the scheme?

The scheme will allow Council to increase the capacity of the existing City Cemetery by circa 1,000 plots.
