Houses in Multiple Occupation

A House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) is a property which is a shared living accommodation and which is the main residence of three or more people who are from more than two households.  Special rules and standards apply to such properties.

All HMO owners must have a license from their local council to run it as an HMO.  Belfast City Council manage the delivery of the HMO scheme in Northern Ireland on behalf of all local councils.  If you wish to apply for a HMO license or have any other queries in relation to HMO's in your area you can contact the HMO Unit using the following email or telephone number:
