Council is committed to the conservation, community engagement and celebration of our historic environment.  We value the heritage that has shaped and defined our people and landscape.

HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT

Our City and District has a rich and diverse historic environment that contributes to our sense of place and history.  Our archaeology and built heritage assets includes many areas and sites of local and international interest.  These assets include monuments such as the City Walls, our conservation areas, listed buildings and numerous protected archaeological remains.

HERITAGE ASSETS 

  • Did you know that we have 862 archaeological sites and monuments across the Council area?
  • Most notable are the City Walls, the 14th century Harry Avery Castle (Newtownstewart) and the 15th century Derg Castle (Castlederg).
  • Did you know that there are 128 scheduled Monuments in the Council area as well as 14 monuments in State Care?
  • Did you know that we have 675 Listed Buildings?
  • Did you know that we have 9 registered historic Parks, Gardens and Demesnes and 13 additional parks, gardens and demesnes?
