Our Climate Commitment
Net zero and climate resilient by 2045
Council declared a Climate Emergency in 2019 and made a Climate Pledge in 2020 to ensure the City & District reaches net-zero, climate resilience by 2045. Our emerging Climate Change Strategy 2027–2045 and Climate Action Plan will set out how — integrating the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals, and steered by the All Party Climate Emergency Working Group, All Party Severe Weather Working Group and cross-departmental Climate Action Group.
The Strategy sets our long-term vision and priorities, aligned to our Climate Pledge and delivered in partnership with the Derry and Strabane Sustainability & Climate Commission. Our organisational Action Plan is the roadmap for our own operations and estate — cutting Council emissions, building resilience, and supporting nature recovery. Both are due to be launched in early 2027 and will be delivered through rolling five-year implementation plans.

- Sustainable Transport — a low/zero-emission Council fleet, more EV infrastructure, sustainable travel.

- Nature & Biodiversity — restoring habitats, planting trees, nature-based flood and carbon solutions.
