Houses in Multiple Occupation

Houses in Multiple Occupation

The Houses in Multiple Occupation Act (Northern Ireland) 2016 comes into operation on 1st April 2019.  On this date local Councils across NI take over responsibility for regulating Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs), such as shared flats and houses from the Housing Executive.

Belfast City Council will manage the delivery of the NI HMO Scheme on behalf of local Councils.

All Houses in Multiple Occupation must be licensed by their local Council and all HMO owners must comply with the Houses in Multiple Occupation Act (Northern Ireland) 2016

You can apply online or in person at Derry City and Strabane District Council’s offices and you must provide all the relevant documentation and the appropriate fee .
