‘Be Active’ Support for Sport Programme
The ‘Be Active’ Support for Sport is a small grants programme primarily aimed at grassroots sports. The programme aims to prioritise investment in sports clubs, especially those based in areas of greatest need that will deliver demonstrable increases in sports participation amongst identified target groups.Programme Priorities:
The programme seeks to prioritise the development of grass roots sport and maximise positive community sport legacies. Increase participation in sport and physical recreation especially among underrepresented groups:
• Women and girls
• People with a disability
• People living in areas of greatest need
• Ethnic Minorities
• Older People
In particular, Council welcomes applications from projects which will tackle health inequalities and improve health and wellbeing.
Types of projects we will fund?
Clubs can submit a maximum of 1 application, up to a maximum of £2,000 across the following areas.
- Participation Initiatives (involves coaching, programming and project specific venue hire. Venue hire can only account for a maximum amount of £750).
- Performance (involves travel to competition for events you have qualified to attend, or hosting regional significant events within the district).
- Coach Education (Sports Specific and Generic Courses)
- Equipment (Must be project specific up to a maximum of £500.00. Can not be a stand-alone equipment application) The applicant club have sole responsibility for the ongoing maintenance and safe usage of any equipment purchased.

Sports Committee Maintenance Fund
Following the completion of the Playing Pitch Strategy, Derry City and Strabane District Council's Sports Committee has invested in a new Maintenance Fund that will provide financial assistance towards clubs who own and maintain their facilities and in particular playing pitches.The aim of the fund is to provide financial assistance to ensure that clubs have the opportunity to maintain their playing surface to the highest level, therefore enabling greater usage on a more regular basis. Any financial assistance must be associated with maintenance of the playing surface or fixed asset that is integral towards the delivery of the sport.
- The fund will cover project specific costs associated with maintaining the existing playing surface.
- The playing pitch/facility must be of competition standard and capable of hosting official matches at all age levels.
- The programme will fund up to 50% of eligible maintenance costs up to a maximum of £2,000.
- Applicants must complete the eligibility checklist and will be required to produce the relevant documentation should the application be successful.
- Applicants will be required to provide proof of ownership or evidence of a lease agreement in excess of 10 years.
