Shaping Our Tourism Future 2026-2031
Derry City & Strabane is building on a decade of tourism success to deliver the next phase of growth for the city and district. The new five‑year Tourism Action Plan sets out how Council and partners will strengthen the Walled City and riverfront, grow rural and outdoor experiences, and further develop food and drink, culture and events to attract visitors year‑round and support local jobs and businesses.
The plan is guided by clear values: creating great places for residents and visitors, putting sustainability and climate responsibility at the heart of development, improving accessibility and inclusion, and working in partnership across communities, industry and government. It translates these values into a practical set of actions around product and experience development, visitor information and servicing, targeted destination marketing and the enabling infrastructure, skills and investment needed to deliver them.
Tourism is already a major contributor to the local economy, with visitor spend growing strongly since the pandemic and new investments continuing in accommodation, public realm and attractions. This action plan focuses on making the most of those investments, including City Deal projects, while ensuring that tourism’s benefits are shared across the city, towns, villages and rural areas, and that Derry City & Strabane continues to be recognised as a distinctive, welcoming and sustainable destination of choice.
