Consultation Process

ROUTE CORRIDOR FINALISED, BUNCRANA TO DERRY GREENWAY

After carefully appraising a range of route corridor options against a number of key constraints, the preferred route corridor linking Derry to Buncrana has now been determined. The route, and the Route 1 - Preferred Route Corridor Selection Report July 2019, are now available below. Detailed drawings will also go on display at Carndonagh Public Service Centre and online from Monday 29 July.

Following the summer holiday period the Project Team will convene a Public Information event in the autumn. Details of the emerging design proposals for the selected route corridor will be displayed at this event and people will have further opportunity to interact with the project team. Further details to follow in due course.

While the ‘corridor area’ varies in width, the final alignment of the greenway will be within this corridor with an average width of 5m to 7m.

PROJECT HISTORY

In June 2018, as part of the route selection process, two consultation events were held jointly by Derry City & Strabane District Council and Donegal County Council. On Tuesday 26 June, the first event was held in the Lough Swilly Yacht Club, while the following day - Wednesday 27 June - the general public and landowners within the corridor of interest were also able to view plans in Templemore Sports Complex, Derry.

SECTION 3 - INCH LEVELS TO FAHAN

An additional consultation event was held in Fowler Hall, Tooban, on Thursday 7 February 2019. This event focused solely on the section linking Inch Island to Fahan (known as section 3 on the route options map below in the section called Drawings and Maps 2018). After carefully appraising a range of route corridor options against a number of key constraints, the final NWGN - Route 1 - Preferred Route Corridor Selection Report July 2019 was produced and is available above.

EMERGING PREFERRED ROUTE PUBLISHED NOVEMBER 2018

In May 2018, two consultation days were jointly held by Derry City & Strabane District Council and Donegal County Council. On Wednesday 23 May, the first event was held in Hollybush Primary School, Culmore, County Derry. The following day, Thursday 24 May, a second event was held in the Community Hall, Muff. As a result of these events last summer, feedback received and the criteria used to select route options, an emerging design‌ was put on public display in Culmore (29 November) and Muff (30 November). The event in Culmore was advertised in line with Pre-Application Consultation Process (PACC) guidelines.

ROUTE 3 - STRABANE TO LIFFORD

The emerging design proposals for the planned greenway route that will link Strabane in County Tyrone to Lifford in County Donegal were on display on 24 and 25 October, Strabane and Lifford respectively. The two local authorities are planning to construct a segregated shared looped cycle route connecting some of the key residential, commercial and civic centres in the two towns.

Report

Route 3, Strabane-Derry-Constraints and Route Options Report stage 1-2

The ‘Scheme Assessment and Design Options Report’ describes the combined Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the Design Option Appraisal Process for the proposed Strabane to Lifford Route of North West Greenway Network (NWGN) Scheme. It sets out the project background and the European, national and local policy guidelines which frame the scheme and the development of Greenway Schemes. The report identifies a Study Area and describes the Constraints, Opportunities and Areas of Interest within the Study Area that will inform the consideration of design options.

One viable Design Option from, and around Strabane to the border at Lifford has been identified. One preferred Design Option has been identified from the border at Lifford to Murlog Church, with a provision being made to both sides of the N14 for a portion of its length. The report describes these Routes and explains the design options considered.

As no viable alternative routes have been identified, this report combines the Stage 2 Preferred Route Selection.

After these events, visualisations and maps will be published online.
