Pennyburn Dog Shelter is now under Council management.
Council wishes to sincerely thank Pet FBI for their support over the years in the rehoming of both stray and unwanted dogs.
Reporting a lost/stray dog

• Your name, address, and telephone number
• Description of dog including its type, colour, size and approximate age.
• The time, date and location where you found the dog or details of when and where you last seen your dog.
If you are collecting a lost or stray dog, please contact the Council Offices in advance

The law requires that all stray dogs are kept for a minimum of 5 days to allow the owners the opportunity of reclaiming them. for a stray dog is £16.00 for the first day and £8.50 per day thereafter.
It is essential that the lost or stray dog is collected by its rightful owner. Prior to release of your dog, you will be asked to provide some form of identification confirming your name and current address e.g., driving licence, passport, utility bill etc; as well as providing some proof of dog ownership e.g., ideally dog licence, microchip number but could include veterinary bill, dog breed papers, family pictures of the dog etc.; and the required release fee.
Rehoming a lost/stray dog
Council will make every attempt to responsibly rehome a stray dog that remains unclaimed, either directly from the dog shelter or via a number of supporting animal rehoming charities. Dogs that are aggressive, have a history of aggression or are ill are not suitable for rehoming.
Please contact our Dog Control Service if you are interested in rehoming an unclaimed stray dog.
Unwanted dogs: Please note that Council no longer accepts unwanted dogs. If you have a dog that needs rehomed, we recommend that you contact the animal rehoming charities: Rainbow Rehoming Centre for Rescue Cats and Dogs (Tel: 028 71 812882), Dogs Trust Ballymena (Tel: 0303 003 0000) and Causeway Coast Dog Rescue (Tel: 07595 602702). All charities would be appreciative of any donations to assist in the rehoming of your dog.
