Traffic and Travel information 

Motorists and residents are advised to plan ahead and expect some temporary traffic disruption on Sunday 17th May 2026 as the Strabane Lifford Half Marathon takes place.

The 11th edition of the cross-border event will start at 9:30am from the Alley Theatre, Strabane, and finish at Melvin Athletics Track, with final runners expected to arrive at approximately 12:45pm.

The route will take runners from Strabane through Lifford, out through Clady village and back into Strabane, finishing at Melvin Athletics Track. The early miles of the course will also pass through Strabane town centre.


Expected Traffic Disruption

Short-term delays are expected along sections of the route throughout the morning.

Key areas likely to be affected include:

Railway Street and surrounding areas
Approx. 9:00am – 10:30am

Urney Road, A5, Bradley Way and Bridge Street
Approx. 9:00am – 12:30pm

Traffic may also be affected at various times along sections of the following roads:

  • Railway Street
  • Main Street
  • Bridge Street
  • Urney Road
  • A5, from Melmount Road Roundabout to Barnhill Road
  • Bradley Way Roundabout
  • Bradley Way
  • John Wesley Street
  • Canal Street
  • Dock Street
  • A5 Barnhill
  • A38 Lifford Road
  • N15 through Clady Village
  • Great Northern Link Junction
  • Meeting House Street
  • Strabane Pedestrian Bridge

Temporary traffic restrictions will be in place for short periods only and have been carefully planned in consultation with PSNI, An Garda Síochána, the Department for Infrastructure and Donegal County Council to ensure public safety and minimise disruption.


Donegal Traffic Information

On the Donegal side of the border, the N15 southbound lane between Lifford and Clady will be closed from 8:30am to 1:00pm.

Signed diversion routes will be in place, and motorists are asked to follow all signage and allow extra time for their journeys.


Advice for Motorists and Residents

Motorists are encouraged, where possible, to avoid the race route during the event.

Please allow extra time for your journey, follow signed diversions and take direction from police, Gardaí and race marshals on the day.

Residents living along the route are asked to park vehicles off the road in advance of the race where possible. Anyone exiting onto affected roads should do so with care.

As the event takes place on a Sunday morning, those travelling to church services in Strabane, Lifford, Castlefinn and Doneyloop are advised to allow additional travel time.


Parking Information

There will be no parking available at Melvin Sports Complex on race day.

Designated Half Marathon participant parking will be available at Canal Street Car Park, located directly behind the start line at the Alley Theatre.

Additional public parking will be available at:

  • John Wesley Street
  • Lower Main Street
  • Butcher Street

 Traffic & Travel Update - Strabane Lifford Half Marathon (Sun 18th of May) 
Motorists are advised to expect delays in Strabane, Lifford & Clady on Sunday morning due to the 10th Strabane Lifford Half Marathon.
  •  Race Starts: 9:30am at the Alley Theatre
  •  Finishes: 12:30pm at Melvin Running Track
Key roads affected include:
  •  Main St, Bridge St, Urney Rd, Bradley Way, Railway St, A5, A38 Lifford Rd, N15 (Lifford - Clady, closed 8:30am - 1pm), Ballycolman Estate & others.
  •  New route includes Strabane town centre and Strabane Pedestrian Bridge - expect disruption in central Strabane between 9:30 -10:00am.
  •  No parking at Melvin Sports Complex - use Canal St Car Park or others nearby.
  •  Police, Gardaí & marshals will be on hand. Please follow diversions and allow extra time for travel, including for Sunday church services.
