Street Naming and Property Numbering

Naming and Numbering of Properties
The Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) (NI) Order 1995 affords Council discretion to approve numbers, name streets and provide street signage, including street names expressed in languages other than English. The Building Control Department of Derry City and Strabane District Council is responsible for this function.

Property Numbering
In accordance with the legislation, Council can allocate numbers to the properties on a particular road or street.

Street Naming
To apply for a new street name you need to make an application to us when the development starts on site.
The developer, architect, builder or housing association can make the application. The proposed naming needs to meet the criteria set out in the Street Naming and Property Numbering Policy.

The proposed naming must meet the criteria set out in the Street Naming and Property Numbering Policy.

The application should be accompanied by:
  1. A site location map
  2. A site layout showing the arrangement of the buildings on site and their site numbers (Note: site numbers are project numbers, not postal numbers)
  3. For multi‑storey apartment buildings, floor plans showing the entrances and site numbers

Applications should be sent electronically to [email protected] or submitted in person at one of the Council Offices in Derry or Strabane.

Dual Language Street Signs
The Council has the power to erect street name plates in dual language, English and another language. Derry City and Strabane District Council will erect street name plates in English and in another language, where certain conditions are met.
The Street Naming and Property Numbering Policy details the process for requesting a dual language name plate and how decisions are made.
Applications for dual language street name plates can be made by an occupier of the street who is registered on the electoral role, or Council. To apply please complete a dual language application form and return to [email protected], or in person at one of our Council Offices in Derry or Strabane.

Guidance on Building Number Plates
Council allocate all postal numbers and street names within the Derry City and Strabane Council District and home owners have a responsibility to ensure that properties are marked with their allocated house or building number. Having a number displayed on your property not only assists emergency services finding your home when time is critical, but will also help other delivery drivers and services locate your home/building.

Council recommends the following guidance when providing number plates:

  • Numbers on residences should be at least 3 inches (75 mm) high, and the Numbers on businesses should be at least 4 inches (100 mm) high.
  • Numbers should contrast with the background (Black numbering on a white background is the most contrasting – especially in the dark)
  • Reflective numbers are recommended, especially for visibility at night.
  • Numbers should be placed on, above, or at the side of the main entrance, so that they can be easily detected from the street.
  • If the entrance is more than 45 feet / (15m) from the street, or cannot be seen from the street, the numbers should be displayed on the mailbox or on a post/fence at the street or end of the drive.
  • Numbers should be installed in a location that can be clearly seen by traffic coming from both directions.
  • Numbers should not be placed near any greenery that could potentially obscure the number with further growth.
  • Avoid decorative lettering, as it is more difficult to read.
