Maximum Tenancy Deposit Limit

Landlords can no longer ask for or retain a tenancy deposit of more than one month’s rent. If after 1st April 2023 a landlord has taken more than one month’s deposit, they must now reimburse the excess taken to the tenant.

It is now an offence for a landlord to ask for or retain a tenancy deposit of more than one month’s rent. This can result in a Fixed Penalty Notice of £500 or a fine up to £2500 in Court for non-payment of the Fixed Penalty Notice.
