Online Marketplace Safety Campaign

Shop Smart. Stay Safe

Even trusted online marketplaces can list unsafe tech that breaks easily, gives electric shocks, or in the worst cases, catches fire. And while Cyber Monday deals move fast, making sure a product is safe only takes a few seconds.

You know a good deal when you see one – but even the savviest shoppers can get caught out. In fact, one study found that nearly 1 in 4 people have unknowingly bought a counterfeit electrical product online.

Before you buy, make sure you:

Check the seller
Research their name, location, and how long they’ve been selling.

Read the reviews
Look for detailed feedback that mentions product quality and safety—not just star ratings.

Verify the product description
Check for usage instructions, warnings, materials information, and safety markings such as UKCA or CE.

Check for recalls
Search 'Product Recalls' on GOV.UK to make sure the item hasn’t been flagged as unsafe.

Stop. Check. Don’t get burnt.
